Anyone got tips on negotiating when the sticker is under 2000? There’s a roadmaster I want to look at in OKC listed at 1300. Many thanks!

Same as any other negotiation, start low meet in the middle.

you: okay, lets talk price. I’ve got $1000 right here with your name on it (helps if you flash it. seeing a large stack of $ changes a mans mind)
start the back and forth.
personally, at THAT price point, i’d just give him the 1300 and be off with it.
work from there.

Most effective is to check a price guide, if their car is listed for a higher price for a given condition, then you can show them the guide to prove you’re not just BS’ing them.
Otherwise just look for broken and worn out stuff. Tires? Tire rod ends or ball joints? Brake pads? Whatever they may have missed and not factored into the price.

If the price is reasonable (or already a steal in your favor), don’t even bother trying to negotiate it further.

Bring cash. People selling cars at that price point generally either A. really need the money or B. are selling their beater and don’t want to fuck around and waste time selling such a cheap car.
Selling to A is usually easier ‘cause when you’re broke, cash in hand is always better than cash you might get later.
Selling to B, it still helps to have cash in hand so they know they don’t have to mess around with cashier’s checks, going to your bank, PayPal, or offers of a “payment plan, bro.”

As someone who recently sold a beater (and bought that beater from example A), I agree.

Same as anything else. Everyone posts a price with room for negotiations. He’ll take $1200 for sure...possibly less.

I'm pretty sure if I was selling a car for $1300 and someone started doing that I would get agitated. The person knows they are selling a beater therefore it will have problems.

I second this. Let's say it's listed at 1300 but you want to pay around 1150. Initially offer 1000. They should counter with 1200. Then offer to split the difference at 1150 as you have cash in hand and can get the deal closed.

show up with cash. Count out 10 $100s. “here’s a thousand cash?” When/if they say no, pull out another $100... Repeat as needed.

I’m pretty sure if you’re selling a beater, you’re aware of the sort of person who buys beaters, and really shouldn’t be surprised unless you’ve just landed on this planet.

Yeah, you’re not necessarily getting screwed if you pay the asking price.

I'm not saying I would be surprised, just agitated.

Just look at the price. He listed it for 1300 and he will let it go for 1200 best case. His bottom dollar is 1000. He won't go any lower than 1000, but you have to be stern that you will only pay 1000.

Your position is much better if you have cash in hand. Say “I want it but I only brought 1000 with me today”....9 times out of 10 you will get it. If you offer like 500 or something though he might tell you to frig off. 1000 is about as low as I would go.
